چکیده

Even though biological legs operate amazingly springlike, they clearly deviate from a perfect spring. For instance, experimental data of human hopping and running suggest an increase in leg length and a decrease in leg stiffness between touchdown and takeoff. Here, this variability of human gait is considered as a fundamental system property and introduced via non-constant leg parameters to a 1-DOF spring-mass model. This approach may help overcome the need for precise parameter tuning and complex control schemes in artificial legged locomotory systems.

Human hopping on damped surfaces: strategies for adjusting leg mechanics.

Fast-moving legged animals bounce along the ground with spring-like legs and agilely traverse variable terrain. Previous research has shown that hopping and running humans maintain the same bouncing movement of the body's centre of mass on a range of elastic surfaces by adjusting their spring-like legs to exactly offset changes in surface stiffness. This study investigated human hopping on damp...

Correlation between lower body stiffness and agility in racket-sports athlete

Stiffness is an index for determination of elastic properties of body and its optimum range is different in various motion patterns. The Spring-mass model is used for calculating stiffness. In this method, the whole leg is modeled with a linear simple spring. The aim of this study is determination of lower body stiffness and evaluation of its correlation with agility, as dominant motion patt...

Effects of prophylactic ankle and knee braces on leg stiffness during hopping

During human movement, the leg can be represented as a mechanical spring, with its stiffness potentially contributing to sports performance and injury prevention. Although many individuals perform athletic activities with joint stabilizers, little is known about the effects of prophylactic lower extremity braces on leg stiffness. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ankl...

Musculoskeletal Basis for the Scaling of Leg Stiffness with Body Mass in Humans

INTRODUCTION Running, hopping and trotting animals can be modeled as spring-mass systems in which the mechanical behavior of the musculoskeletal system is represented as a leg spring. The stiffness of the leg spring is the primary determinant of the dynamics of running. Biomechanical studies have revealed that larger mammalian species have stiffer legs (Farley et al., 1993). Similarly, large ad...

Intrinsic ankle and hopping leg-spring stiffness in distance runners and aerobic gymnasts.

The objective of this study was to examine the contribution of intrinsic ankle stiffness to leg-spring stiffness in high level athletes using various musculotendinous solicitations. 8 aerobic gymnasts (G), 10 long-distance runners (R) and 7 controls (C) were evaluated using quick-release and sinusoidal perturbation tests in order to quantify their respective plantarflexor musculotendinous ( SI(...
